New Conductor for the Toowoomba Choral Society

Following in her father’s (John Penny) footsteps, Elizabeth Egan takes on the role of Conductor of the Toowoomba Choral Society’s “Classic Choral”.

John Penny’s long standing history with the Toowoomba Choral society began at age 8 as a member of the Junior Choir. He rose through the ranks to become the conductor of the “Junior Choir” (1984-1991) and the conductor of the “Senior Choir” (1985-1996). John continued his involvement with the society as Director/Artistic Director of the Youth Choir Holiday Theatre Activity and the annual Musical Production until his untimely death in 2008.

Sharing a passion for music like her father before her, and through a long and successful Penny family involvement with the society, it is no surprise that Elizabeth is ready to “take the baton”.

I am excited that this opportunity has presented itself, having previously enjoyed a lifetime of involvement with the various facets of the Society ” Elizabeth said.

One of the society’s objectives is to cultivate and advance choral music in Toowoomba. It is my desire, like my father before me, that choir should be an enjoyable experience whilst still maintaining a standard of musical excellence”. Elizabeth said.

With a Bachelor of Music, Elizabeth’s 16 year career in music has encompassed piano, vocal, violin, ‘cello and theory tuition; choral, vocal and instrumental accompanying; and choral and strings conducting in a variety of schools, churches and societies in the Toowoomba area.

I first started with the Choral Society as a junior chorister back in 1986, and have been involved in over 22 Stage Productions, along with hundreds of Choral Concerts and Queensland Eisteddfodau with the society” Elizabeth said. The Toowoomba Choral Society has been competing in the Queensland Eisteddfod since 1955, so I am particularly honoured to be able to continue this longstanding tradition of preparing the choir for this event”. I know my father would be extremely proud” Elizabeth said.

In keeping with family tradition, Elizabeth will be relying on her husband Andrew Egan’s skills as accompanist for the choir. Andrew is no stranger to the society, having been involved since 1996. Andrew’s involvement included assisting John Penny with set painting, accompanying the Adult and Contemporary choirs, as repetiteur for many stage productions and as the Production Chairperson/Producer for the society’s annual musical.

“Classic Choral” is a community choir open to anyone 16 years and over. They tackle anything from Madrigals to Modern, from Baroque to Broadway. Classic Choral” will be representing Toowoomba in the Queensland Eisteddfod in Caloundra on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. For more information please contact the secretary.
